Timothy Mozgov, yes Timothy Mozgov got a four-year $64 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers. I know, doesn't make sense to me either.

Kevin Durant sounds likely to stay with the Oklahoma City Thunder, but is meeting with other teams still.

Last day of the work week and The Stack is ecstatic for the long holiday weekend.  We have a few things to get to first though so let’s get right to it and see what’s in “the stack” for today, Friday, July 1st:

NBA Free Agency commences

NBA (and NHL) free agency start today and there is a bevy of activity already from the Association.  Kevin Durant met with the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday and reports say that he is likely to go re-sign with the Thunder.  He will be meeting with other teams including the Los Angeles Clippers, but the Thunder are in the driver’s seat to keep him.  We know that Joakim Noah is likely headed to the New York Knicks and ESPNs Marc Stein reports that Hassan Whiteside is meeting with the Dallas Mavericks who are also very interested in point guard Mike Conley.  With the salary cap exploding to $70 million there is a lot of money that teams can throw at players and there will be plenty of players that make more money than they are probably worth, but hey if teams want to pay you, you’d be crazy not to take the money.  That includes Timofey Mozgov who signed a four-year $64 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.  That’s right, Timofey Mozgov.  Yowza!  Dwight Howard’s going to meet with the Boston Celtics and Atlanta Hawks it sounds like.  Going to the hometown Hawks would make a lot of sense.  A lot of crazy things will be happening.  It will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

NFL Suspensions

Plenty of suspensions in the NFL came down yesterday.  Let’s recap what happened…

  • New York Jets DE Sheldon Richardson has been suspended for one game for violating the NFL personal conduct policy.  This stems from pleading guilty in January to resisting arrest after leading police on a high speed chance in July 2015.  No jail time resulted from the incident, but Richardson has been in trouble before and the NFL slapped a one game suspension on him.

  • Here’s a shocker: Rolando McClain has gotten in trouble and has received a suspension from the NFL.  The Dallas Cowboys LB has been suspended ten games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.  He was suspended the first four games of last year and had issues in Oakland with the Raiders and ended up retiring for a short period of time.  He appears to not get it.

  • Finally I guess this is just a formality, but the NFL has suspended free agent quarterback Johnny Manziel four games regarding the substance abuse policy.  At this point right now, Manziel is just a cancer to any team that wants to take him.  He has so many issues and has shown that a) he doesn’t get it and b) he doesn’t have any intent on being a QB in the NFL seriously.  His dad thinks jail would be best and says his son is a “druggie.”  Such a great talent is being wasted.  Manziel needs so much help and he seems unwilling to get it.  He may eventually kill himself if he doesn’t get treatment.  That would be a really sad story.

    Euro Cup update

Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal continue to move on in the Euro Cup.  They topped Poland 1-1 and 5-3 in penalty kicks to advance to the semi-finals.  Poland scored right out of the gates in the second minute, but Portugal answered in the 33rd minute.  Portugal was perfect in their penalty kicks and is moving on.  Today’s match is a good one between Wales and Belgium at 3 PM ET on ESPN2.  Let’s go Wales.  Saturday’s match pits Germany against Italy at 3 PM ET on ESPN2 and then the big one on Sunday is the host country France against Cinderella story Iceland at 3 PM ET on ESPN2.  I don’t think I need remind you that Iceland is the official favorite team of the The Stack in this Euro Cup, but I will anyway.  Go ICELAND!  RAGNAR!  CLAP, CLAP!

Enjoy your 4th of July holiday weekend.  Be safe and have a great time at the lake or wherever you may be with family and friends.  It’s a day to remember and celebrate our independence.

Coming up next week (most likely Wednesday): Reaction to top headlines in the sports world.
