What did The Stack all miss by not posting yesterday?  Well we’ll recap briefly plus a couple of other headlines from the day in “the stack” for today, Thursday, March 31st:

Let’s get caught up

Los Angeles Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell taped a conversation with teammate Nick Young about the different women Young has been with.  Young is engaged to Iggy Azalea.  Doesn’t sound like Young was completely aware that Russell was filming him, but what’s even more puzzling is who released the video.  Did Russell?  Not a good situation at all.  No one on the Lakers wants any part of Russell right now.  This is a team in turmoil.  Russell is proving to be very young and immature.

Fast forward now to Wednesday night, and both Russell and Young met with the media separately before the Lakers game against the Miami Heat.  Russell said he feels, “as sick as possible” regarding the situation and that he wishes he, “could make things better right away, but I can’t.”  Well duh!  Russell is young and young people make mistakes, but this is something that he will have to live with and will haunt him the rest of his career.  No one thinks what he did was OK.  NBA players and athletes alike are ripping him as well they should.  What he did is completely inexcusable.  All he can do is ask for forgiveness and show teammates that he is a good teammate.  This will take time and he may never be able to fully gain his teammate’s trust again.  As Russell said, “I can’t really show my face anywhere without people hating me right now.”  The Lakers wound up winning the game against the Heat 110-102.

The Minnesota Wild swept the season series from the Chicago Blackhawks with a 4-1 Tuesday night, the first time the Blackhawks have been swept in a regular season series since 1938-39.  Considering the Wild’s ineptness against the Blackhawks in the playoffs, should they meet this year, you have to think the Wild’s confidence will be much higher than it would have been.

Apparently “One Shining Moment” is going to be different this year according to Turner.  CBS did this in 2010 with Jennifer Hudson and it was a disaster.  They were heavily criticized as well they should be.  If Turner botches this, they should be ridiculed to no end.  Keep things as they are.  Luther Vandross and “One Shining Moment” is a gem!

Carson Wentz Pro Day thoughts

It’s been exactly one week since North Dakota State University quarterback Carson Wentz held his pro day in Fargo (NFL Network pointed out it was the first time they went live to Fargo, ND for a pro day).  Now that we have had a little time to digest what transpired, here are some thoughts from the pro day:

  • Wentz was extremely impressive.  His throws were accurate including that 70 yard bomb that was placed perfectly in his wide receiver’s hands.  He threw with anticipation and did everything scouts and coaches could ask for.

  • Wentz solidified himself as a top five pick.  More than likely, Wentz will be the first quarterback taken and won’t fall past two to Cleveland.  Cal’s Jared Goff is the only other QB that could go ahead of Wentz, but it doesn’t seem likely at this point.

  • About the only blemish during Wentz’s pro day was when he had a little trouble with the wet football.  He’s going to have to play with some slippery footballs, especially if he goes to Cleveland.  It wasn’t a huge deal, but one thing that Wentz will need to improve on.

  • The media loves him.  Wentz conducted himself very well in the drills and afterwards in the interviews with ESPN and the NFL Network.  They all love him and said it was one of the best pro days by a quarterback they have ever seen.  That may be a bit much, but it was certainly impressive.

All this means that Wentz will get drafted high and even as a Jackrabbits fan, I hope he finds success in the NFL.  If it is in Cleveland, he could be immortal if he leads the Browns to a Super Bowl.  Far easier said than done.

NHL & NBA headlines from the past couple of days

The Washington Capitals are your President’s Cup winners, meaning they will have the most points of any NHL team when the season ends.  Half of the previous 28 President Cup winners went on to win the Stanley Cup.  If only the Capitals could be so fortunate.  They are playing really great hockey and Alexander Ovechkin has been absolutely stupendous.  Yet their playoff history speaks for itself which is why Capitals and hockey fans in general are a little cautious with this feat.

The Anaheim Ducks beat the Calgary Flames 8-3 Wednesday night, but the real story is that the win is the 23rd straight home win for the Ducks against the Flames.  That ties an NHL record for most consecutive wins at home over one team, tying only the Philadelphia Flyers over the Pittsburgh Penguins who won 23 straight from 1980-87.

Speaking of dominance, the Golden State Warriors did it again last night and Tuesday night as well.  The Warriors beat the Washington Wizards 102-94 Tuesday night and then had to sweat it out with the Utah Jazz Wednesday night.  You may remember that the Jazz have given the Warriors one of their seven losses this season.  They were up 89-86 with 20 some seconds left in the game, but the Warriors tied it up 89-89 and the game went into overtime where the Warriors would win 103-96.  They will beat the Chicago Bulls record.  Book it.  I said it in November.  So let it be written.  So let it be done.
